BSA Pack # 173

About Pack 173

Welcome to Pack 173 of Harrisburg, NC!

We are proud to have been chartered by Harrisburg Presbyterian Church since December 1, 1960. Our primary source of new scouts is the Harrisburg community but we welcome any boy who wants to be a member of our unit. We serve boys in grades 1-5 and have about 70 youth members going into the 2015-2016 school year. While we continue to grow, our pack has retained a "family" atmosphere. We are privileged to have a great group of leaders and the incredible support of our scouts' parents and other family members. Adult involvement is strongly encouraged and most adult partners usually stay for our weekly den or pack meetings. Best of all, it's a whole lot of fun!

Our 2014-2015 calendar was filled with a ton of awesome events for our scouts: day camp at Camp Cabarrus; WeBeLoS Adventure Camp at Camp Belk; a monster truck rally at Charlotte Motor Speedway; camping at Dan Nichols Park, under the line near Hanging Rock State Park and by the river at New River State park; slept on the ice with the Charlotte Checkers; sleepover with the wooly mammoth and T-Rex at the Schiele museum of natural history; day events such as the Cabarrus County Fair, Sea Life Aquarium and at Defy Gravity; races at Lowe's Motor Speedway; and Council sponsored events (like Goldrush, Cabarrus Cub-o-ree and WeBeLoS Woods).  Oh, and let's not forget we put on our first ever Shooting Sports weekend where the pack sponsored a district campout that allowed the boys got to shoot BB guns, bows and arrows and slingshots until their arms were tired.

Events on tap for 2015-2016 are still being finalized but will be very similar to last year by including several campouts, indoor sleepovers at different local activity centers and a monumental End of the Year Trip (top secret - to be announced in September). Don't forget our annual pinewood derby, an excellent Holiday Party and the end of year Blue-Gold Banquet!

Most of our activities are funded by our successful popcorn sales. For each of the past several years, Pack 173 has sold more than $20,000 worth of popcorn and has proudly led the ENTIRE Central North Carolina Council as the #1 popcorn selling unit! Talk about "doing your best!" And our fearless Pack 173 leaders go above and beyond the call to help motivate the Scouts. The kick-off pep rally for those years have featured everything from popcorn ninjas to Harrisburg's own version of the Village People to an Abe Lincoln imposter with his own popcorn version of the Gettysburg Address to Minecraft zombies to our own on-stage version of Super Mario Bros.  Some of those years proved so successful that Pack 173 was awarded one of four regional winners from across the US for the BEST Popcorn Kick-Off meeting, which included a cash prize of $2,500 for the pack! As additional motivation, our fearless Pack 173 leaders agreed to undertake a variety of embarrassing activities - pies in the face, shaved heads, and best (or worst, depending on your perspective) of all, a hula dancing display on the steps of Harrisburg Town Hall complete with grass skirts and coconut tops! And those leaders lived up to their promises . . . every last embarrassing one of them!

Each month's pack meeting focuses on the scouts' progress toward rank advancement during the prior month, but we still have LOTS of rowdy and silly fun in the process! We also teach our scouts the importance of community service with den-level and pack-wide service projects. In past years, in an effort to "Make A Difference," our Scouts held canned food drives to benefit a local food bank, assembled more than 400 Valentine's Day care packages to send to US troops stationed abroad, collected 163 pounds of soda can tops to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, and earned more than $300 to donate to the Red Cross to aid the Haitian earthquake relief effort.

Again, we welcome you to the Pack 173 website. Please make sure to contact us if you have any questions. We would love to have you as our guest. Come check us out!
